<\/a>Y la respuesta \u2013equivocada\u2014fue la que dio el CEO de Yahoo: no vender. Jerry Yang, cofundador de Yahoo!, declin\u00f3 la oferta de Microsoft de pagar 33 d\u00f3lares por acci\u00f3n, mas del doble de lo que est\u00e1n actualmente. La estocada final se dio cuando Yahoo y Google no llegaron a un acuerdo para trabajar de manera conjunta la publicidad en Yahoo, debido \u2013principalmente\u2014a las presiones regulatorias. Yang renunci\u00f3 a su cargo y se dedicar\u00e1 d enuevo a ser jefe del Portal.<\/p>\n

Pero admit\u00e1moslo, era realmente dif\u00edcil tomar la decisi\u00f3n acertada en aquel momento. La actitud de Yang parec\u00eda v\u00e1lida, dadas las circunstancias, pero la crisis econ\u00f3mica mundial subsiguiente no era f\u00e1cil de vaticinar. Las cosas luc\u00edan de otra manera: un Microsoft desesperado por el avance de Google y con la billetera repleta deber\u00eda haber elevado la oferta. Si pero no. <\/p>\n

A los que nos gusta un poco ver la historia de las corporaciones, Microsoft \u2013m\u00e1s que otras\u2014tiene una colecci\u00f3n muy corta de \u00e9xitos \u2013pero eso s\u00ed, muy contundentes\u2014y una larga retah\u00edla de fracasos: \u00bfSe acuerdan de Bob? \u00bfNT 5.0? \u00bfO cuando msn quiso destruir a la Internet? Eso sin mencionar al fallido Vista.<\/p>\n

Pero \u00bfy Yahoo? Yahoo cuenta con una historia impresionante de \u00e9xitos al principio de la Internet tal como se conoce hoy \u2013la que vino despu\u00e9s del gopher y el ICQ\u2014y logr\u00f3 borrar a importantes iniciativas de buscadores y directorios hasta que apareci\u00f3 Google, el mismo que tiene a Microsoft preocupado. <\/p>\n

Pero… \u00bfs\u00ed Microsoft tienes m\u00e1s dinero como puede Google alcanzarlo tan bien? <\/p>\n

Esta pregunta tiene dos respuestas. La primera es que realmente Google no est\u00e1 alcanzando a Microsoft, tal como lo plantean muchos. De hecho Google tiene un buscador mejor que el de Microsoft, y una serie de herramientas y aplicaciones en l\u00ednea que Microsoft no logra alcanzar. Punto. Pero Microsoft es mucho m\u00e1s que eso. Google Docs no puede competir con Office, Chrome no es competencia a\u00fan para Internet Explorer y Google no tiene sistemas operativos de PC ni de servidores. Es m\u00e1s, ni siquiera androide puede ser visto, al menos actualmente, como una competencia seria a Windows Mobile. <\/p>\n

Pero la otra respuesta a esa pregunta es si. Google se le ha acercado tanto a Microsoft aunque s\u00f3lo invierta una sexta parte en investigaci\u00f3n y desarrollo, gracias a un esquema de trabajo diferente. Uno de los mejores ejemplos es el llamado tiempo Google, que da a los empleados la posibilidad de dedicar hasta medio d\u00eda a la semana en nuevos proyectos, generalmente personales. <\/p>\n

Mientras ocurre esta lucha entre gigantes, Yahoo! \u2013relegado al papel de naufrago en el agua\u2014sigue chapoteando para mantenerse a flote. Aunque est\u00e1 desarrollando nuevas tecnolog\u00edas, incluyendo su propia nube de c\u00f3mputo, el \u00e1nimo dentro de la empresa debe estar lejos de ser el m\u00e1s \u00f3ptimo.
